Elementary Terminology of Network

☞ Nodes (Workstations) :

• It refers to computers that are attached to a network and are seeking to share resources.
• Example : smartphones, laptops etc.

☞ Server :

• It refers to a computer that facilitates sharing of data, software and hardware sources on the network.

☞ Network Interface Unit (NIU) :

• It is an interpreter that helps in establishing communication between the server and the client.
• Each NIU has a unique physical address called the MAC address.

☞ Media Access Control (MAC) Address :

• It is a unique identifier assigned by the manufacturer to NIC for uses as a network address in communication.
• It is 12 digit hexadecimal number.

☞ IP Address :

• Every machine on a TCP/IP network has a unique identifying number called an IP address.
• It is provided by ISP.

☞ Domain Name :

• It is a way to identify and locate the computer connected to the internet.
• It is always unique.
