TYPES OF COMMUNICATION


☞ There are three forms of communication:

1. Verbal Communication
2. Non- Verbal Communication
3. Visual Communication

VERBAL COMMUNICATION

☞ Verbal communication includes sounds, words, language, and speech.

TYPES OF VERBAL COMMUNICATION

1. Oral Communication
2. Written Communication:

Oral Communication:

  • It is a two - way process and involves both speaking and listening.
  • It can be face-to-face or distance communication.
  • It is also termed as Interpersonal Communication.
  • It may include:
    a. Small Group Communication
    b. Public Communication 
    

Written Communication:

  • It involves writing words.
  • It can be letters, circulars, reports, manuals, emails, etc.
  • It can be between two or more persons.

ADVANTAGES OF VERBAL COMMUNICATION

  • Exchange ideas and get quick response.
  • Keep changing our interaction as per the other person’s response.

DISADVANTAGES OF VERBAL COMMUNICATION

  • The meanings can be confusing.
  • Difficult to understand if the right words are not used.

NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION

☞ Non-verbal communication is the expression or exchange of information or messages without using any spoken or written word. We send signals and messages to others, through expressions, gestures, postures, touch, space, eye contact and para language.

TYPES OF NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION

1. Facial Expressions
2. Posture
3. Gestures or Body Language
4. Touch
5. Space
6. Eye contact
7. Paralanguage

VISUAL COMMUNICATION

☞ Visual communication proves to be effective since it involves interchanging messages only through images or pictures.

ADVANTAGES OF VISUAL COMMUNICATION

  • Visual aids make communication more meaningful.
  • Use of visual aids makes complex data easy to comprehend.

DISADVANTAGES OF VISUAL COMMUNICATION

  • It cannot replace content of speech and written word completely.
  • Symbols are difficult to understand or may be misinterpreted.
